Message from GGML Managing Director

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to become a sponsor for the 2023 Geita Gold Mining Limited Kilimanjaro Challenge Against HIV/AIDS. As the Campaign enters its 21st year, the evidence of the impact of this wonderful event on the people of Tanzania is overwhelming. Since the humble beginnings of our first expedition in 2002, the number of recorded new infections in Tanzania has more than halved. The improvement of infrastructure and service delivery in the detection, treatment and counseling of infected people and their communities through the application of the funds to various beneficiaries has played a major role in our commitment to “getting to zero”.

The impact of HIV/AIDS on Tanzania’s population has been devastating with many frail elders being left to care for young children following the death of their parents because of this disease. Often these families do not have the means to support these children with many being left without food, water or care. Geita Gold Mining Limited Kilimanjaro Challenge Against HIV and AIDS Trust will continue to mobilize and disburse funds to various interventions as guided by the government with the view of achieving the “Zero” target in the areas of new infections, stigma and AIDS-related deaths.

Dear Visitor

Message from Kili Trust Manager

Welcome to the website of the Geita Gold Mining Limited Kilimanjaro Challenge Against HIV and AIDS Trust. This is a charity established by Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) in 2002, which has evolved to become the largest private sector initiative of its kind in the fight against the scourge in Tanzania.

The founding of the charity was one of the ways in which GGML expressed one of its and it’s parent company, AngloGold Ashanti’s corporate values, which is that the company is committed to ensuring that the communities and society surrounding its operations are better off because the company having been there – which simply means that GGML endeavours to ensure that the host community benefits from its operations.

For the purpose of raising funds to fight HIV and AIDS in the country, we organise an annual climb of the legendary Mount Kilimanjaro-Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Recently, the “Kili 360” Cycle Challenge was introduced to run concurrently with the climb. The “Kili 360” takes riders on a 480 km clockwise route around the base of Mt Kilimanjaro and up to the Shira Plateau, covering an average of 60 km per day.

In both events, participants go through thick and thin for 6 challenging days. It is a life experience that leaves you physically and morally invigorated. It is a course with no specific syllabus, but one that leaves you with a new lesson about life; struggle, perseverance, discipline – and what all that entails.

The Geita Gold Mining Limited Kilimanjaro Challenge Against HIV and AIDS Trust appreciates the significant financial and material contribution that GGML, its affiliated contractors and all other well-meaning people make each year to support the event and raise funds for the fight against HIV in Tanzania.

In 2008, exactly six years after the charity’s inception, GGML partnered with the Government through the Tanzania Commission for Aids (TACAIDS) to manage the organisation. We now have a board representing both TACAIDS and GGML.

On this website we aim to provide you with all the information you need to better understand what we stand for. We hope you can join us and support the cause.
