Join us in the fight against HIV/AIDS! For over two decades, the GGML Kilimanjaro Challenge has been a beacon of hope, saving lives and transforming communities in Tanzania. Thanks to our climbers, partners, and sponsors, funds raised have supported detection, treatment, and counseling, resulting in the decline in new infections and improving healthcare infrastructure in Tanzania. Dr. Catherine Canute Joachim

Member
Catherine is a dedicated health systems specialist with over 20 years of experience in managing and coordinating public and private healthcare services in Tanzania, also currently serving as the Acting Director for the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS). She specializes in program management, monitoring and evaluation, resource mobilization, research, and human resource management, with a strong focus on building resilient and responsive health systems.

Catherine holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Medicine and Surgery, Postgraduate Training in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and a Master of Science in Global Health Systems. During her tenure at the Ministry of Health, she successfully led the development and implementation of Tanzania’s Global Fund Health Systems Strengthening Program and played a key role in shaping the Health Sector Strategic Plan.

With strong analytical and interpersonal skills, Catherine has built impactful partnerships with local, regional, and global organizations, driving meaningful change in Tanzania’s healthcare sector.

Simon Shayo

Member
Simon Shayo is the Vice President for Sustainability and Corporate Affairs for AngloGold Ashanti’s Ghana and Tanzania Business Unit. With over 20 years of experience in natural resources and extractive industries, he has worked across mining, energy, oil, and gas sectors with global organizations, including British Petroleum (BP), Barrick Gold, and the BBC World Service Trust.

A recognized Sustainability Specialist, Simon plays a key role in shaping Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies, ensuring businesses adhere to global sustainability standards such as the IFC Performance Standards and ICMM Principles. He has extensive experience leading sustainability initiatives in Tanzania and other developing nations.

Beyond his corporate role, Simon serves as Chairman of the UN Global Compact Network in Tanzania (UNGCNT) and holds board positions at Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF), and Geita Greenfield Minerals Exploration Limited. He is also an Executive Councillor at the Tanzania Chamber of Mines (TCM).

His leadership continues to drive sustainable mining practices, corporate responsibility, and impactful community engagement across the industry.

Stephen Mhando

Kili Trust Manager
Stephen Mhando is the Public Relations & Communications Manager at Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) and the Trust Manager for the Kili Challenge Against HIV & AIDS. With a wealth of experience in strategic communication, public relations, and project management, he plays a pivotal role in shaping GGML’s corporate image and advancing the Kili Challenge’s mission of fighting HIV/AIDS in Tanzania.

Before joining GGML, Stephen worked at Deloitte Consulting Limited as a Project and Communications Manager, where he led communication strategies for various projects. He also served at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as a Communication/Public Information Associate, contributing to humanitarian advocacy and public awareness efforts.

With a strong background in corporate communications and stakeholder engagement, Stephen is committed to leveraging his expertise to enhance community impact, foster meaningful partnerships, and drive awareness for the Kili Challenge initiative.

David Nzaligo

Member
David Nzaligo is a licensed Advocate authorized to practice law in Tanzania. Before venturing into corporate legal roles, he served as a lecturer at Tumaini University’s Dar es Salaam College, Faculty of Law, and also held a part-time position at the Law School of Tanzania from 2007 to 2012. Between 2011 and 2014, Nzaligo took on the role of Legal Counsel – Corporate & Contracts for African Barrick Gold. On 1st February 2014, he transitioned to Geita Gold Mining Limited, a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti Plc, where he remains as the Senior Legal Counsel to this day.

As a key figure in the company’s senior management, Nzaligo oversees the legal and regulatory affairs of the Company. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Laws (LLB-2000) from the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law and a Master’s degree in Law (LLM-2002) specializing in International Business Transaction & Comparative Law from the University of San Francisco School of Law in California, USA.

Ikingo Gombo

Ikingo Gombo is the Senior Manager for Finance and Supply Chain at Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), bringing over 18 years of experience in financial management within the mining industry. Since joining GGML in 2006 as an Accounts Payables Officer, he has risen through various leadership roles, including Management Accountant and Chief Accountant, before assuming his current position.

He plays a key role in financial strategy and supply chain operations, ensuring efficient procurement, financial management, and reporting to optimize cash flows and shareholder returns. Gombo is a member of GGML’s Board, Executive Committee (ExCom), Audit Committee, and Management Committee (ManCom).

A Certified Public Accountant (ACPA), he also holds an MBA from ESAMI (Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute), earned in 2013. His dedication and expertise continue to strengthen GGML’s financial and operational success.

Duran Archery

Board Chairman
Duran is an experienced leader with over 19 years at AngloGold Ashanti, beginning his career as a management trainee in South Africa. Before becoming Managing Director of Geita Gold Mine (GGM), he served as Vice President for Projects Africa, overseeing key strategic initiatives.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Natal, Durban, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Practice from the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business. With a strong engineering and project management background, Duran excels in navigating technical complexities and driving business growth.

As MD of GGM, he is committed to collaboration, operational excellence, and strategic leadership, ensuring the company continues to make a lasting impact in Tanzania.
