Welcome to Geita Gold Mining Limited Kilimanjaro Challenge Against HIV and AIDs Trust website. This is a charity organization founded by Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) in 2002, which has evolved to become the biggest private sector initiative of its kind in the fight against the scourge in Tanzania.
The founding of the charity was one of the ways of GGML’s means of expressing one of its business values, in which the Company commits that the communities and societies around the operation must be better off for the company having been there-which simply means that GGML endeavors to ensure that the host community benefits from its business.
In this website we endeavor to provide you with all information you need in order to understand better what we stand for. We hope you can then join and support the cause.
Recently a ‘Kili 360’ Cycle Challenge was introduced to run concurrently with the climb. The event takes riders on a 480 km clockwise route around the base of Mt Kilimanjaro and up to Shira Plateau, covering an average of 60 km per day.
The Geita Gold Mine Kilimanjaro 360° cycle challenge is a fundraising initiative that runs in conjunction with the annual GGM mountain climbing expedition where cyclist traverse around the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro while the climbers trek up the mountain in an effort to reach Uhuru peak.
For the purpose of raising funds to fight HIV and AIDS in the country, every year we organize a climb to the top of the legendary Mount Kilimanjaro-Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Africa.
Both events engage participants for 6 challenging days through thick and thin. It is a life experience which leaves you re-energized physically and morally. It is a course with no specific syllabus, but one which leaves you with a new lesson about life; the struggle, perseverance, discipline-and what all these bring with them.
The aim of the fundraiser is to join the Tanzanian government in their efforts to combat the pandemic of HIV/AIDS across the country. The cycle is a group activity and not a race. We aim to ride a challenging yet enjoyable predetermined route around the base of the mountain. The total distance is +/- 500km with a total ascent of +/-10000 meters over seven days. The predicted average speed of the ride will be around 15km/hr. Find the daily route profiles at the bottom of this document.
In 2008, exactly 6 years after the charity’s inception GGML partnered with the Government through the Tanzania Commission for Aids (TACAIDS) to manage the organization. We now have a Board of Directors representing both TACAID and GGML.
Geita Gold Mining Limited Kilimanjaro Challenge Against HIV and AIDS Trust appreciates the significant financial and material contribution that GGML, its affiliated contractors and all other well-wishers make every year to support the event and raise funds to fight HIV in Tanzania.
